Finding the Good Kitchen A Trio of Culinary Masters story and photos by Scott Vlaun
A little Southern Comfort at Loon Lodge in Rangeley! Barbequed spare ribs over cheesy grits topped with crisp onion rings, cilantro and micro greens.
“Dining is and always was a great artistic opportunity.”
~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Whether you are in western Maine on a well-deserved vacation, celebrating
a milestone event with a loved one, or simply looking to be transported
from the daily grind for an evening, there is nothing like fine food, lovingly prepared, and served with care. No matter if it’s the comfort of the tried and true, or the excitement of the new and different, you can find it out here on Maine’s “West Coast.” Dedicated chefs and entrepreneurs remain committed to the fine dining experience, while embracing a more relaxed and casual approach. Despite the recent challenges of disrupted supply chains and seasonal labor shortages, or in some cases, even because of them, exciting new things are happening in western Maine’s gastronomical universe. In other cases they have remained satisfyingly the same.
Comfort Food With an Edge
Loon Lodge on Rangeley Lake’s eastern shore has a long and storied history. This authentic and beautifully designed log cabin structure was built around 1900 as a hunting and fishing lodge, but has recently been raised onto a full foundation. A meticulous renovation has preserved its historical integrity, while providing modern amenities and expanding its capacity. While it
may see more weddings than hunting parties these days, one thing is for certain: They feed their guests with a joyous hospitality befitting the gorgeous architecture and stunning sunset views.
Sue Anderson, with her infectious smile, holds down the front of the house, while husband Brian manages the kitchen as Executive Chef. For Brian,
it’s actually a full circle, having worked in the kitchen here decades before.
