lands coordinator, she told me their winter sched- ule for tours is still in full swing. One event on the agenda that really interested me was a traditional ice harvest. Long before refrigerators were in- vented, folks used ice formed during the winter on surrounding lakes and ponds to keep their perish- ables from spoiling. Ice harvesting was big business back in those days, and I liked getting an up close glimpse to see just how they accomplished it.
Sheri also said, “The ice harvesting event takes place on Bartlett Pond, just down the road from Norlands, and will go hand in hand with a celebra- tion of President’s Day on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors should call ahead (897-4366), or check the website, www.norlands.org a week before attending the event for the most current visitor guidelines.”
From their website, “This annual event is a belated celebration of President’s Day, 1870s style. A special tribute to America’s first president, George Wash- ington, takes place outdoors at 1:30 pm.” Guided
tours of the 1867 Washburn family home will also be offered (reservations are a must), and limited to one single household at a time, with a five person maxi- mum. You may reserve your time by calling the phone number listed. Soup, coffee, hot chocolate and other goodies will be available for a small fee. Remember to bring snowshoes and warm clothes - this is primarily an outdoor happening.
