Camping
Building forts and making fires are other basic skills, yet they require experience and practice. Begin with
a backyard overnight and set realistic expectations. Show that the dark shouldn’t be scary or feared, and a good flashlight or campfire can help demonstrate this. This is a great time to share stories and dream about new adventures, reflect, or just stargaze. This in itself is an awesome activity here in Maine because of our dark skies and lack of light pollution. You can also introduce survival skills, and begin to seek new places to camp. Doing a short overnight backpacking trip is a great way to experience the true wilds of Maine and get off the beaten path, but you’ll need to build some basic skills before setting out.
